how to teach accountability to adults

Being accountable for your actions is a very uncommon trait among young children. Many parents are willing to give in to their children’s needs at the expense that they may never be responsible with the same problem again. So is tough love the right answer? Well yes. It is not unheard of that parents reprimand their children for being irresponsible however, if the same mistake is made again then parents are willing to bail their children out of that situation rather than facing the repercussions.

So how can we solve this problem? Well as stated before tough love is the right answer. Situations where your child can learn from his or her mistakes without you helping them out is the right thing to do as this then cultivates a good habit from a young age of being responsible when it comes to whichever situation your child may be in. Here are some ways you may help your child be accountable for his or her actions.

First, always avoid helping them in situations where they should have been more responsible in the first place. These can be situations such as them forgetting to bring their homework to school or forgetting to sign important school papers, and they require you to help them out. Many parents are guilty of helping their child out regardless but this is not the effective way. To ensure that your child does not make this same mistake again he/she should learn from their actions and face the music for their irresponsibility.

Second, try not to give in to your child’s request for more down time than needed. Again some parents are guilty of this, giving their child more downtime for completing less than adequate amount of work. This will be hard on some parents but being firm is the right thing to do, when the downtime is set for only 35 minutes then it should go over even a minute. If parents adhere to this strict rule then children in return will do their work on time. Some children may even request incessantly as they feel they have completed all their work; however, completion of work does not always equate to more free time. Your child should explore other things that are beneficial to them, such as: reading, playing sports or even drawing.

Many parents would feel this is easier said than done, which is very much true, so we advise all parents to keep this in mind that you are doing this for the benefit of your child, you are doing this to cultivate good habits that will hopefully stay with them in the future too.
